The Future Belongs to Those Who Can Communicate Holistically

11

Anyone exploring a career in communication eventually discovers the same thing: the field is far bigger than one skill or one platform. This guide walks through why studying communication matters, what an Integrated Marketing Communications program offers, and the many career paths available to those who commit to learning it holistically.

Why Study Communication?

Once upon a time, a student – even while still in school – was interested in taking up a career as a writer. He developed a strong vocabulary and built his ability to think “differently.” He expanded his basic spoken language, started keeping a diary, and began writing thoughts, poems, and small articles.

Soon he discovered he could write catchy lines, short stories, and evolve ideas around products – talking about them in different ways. He shared his work with friends and teachers, who broadened his outlook to the many forms of communication that could offer phenomenal career avenues. Upon research, the student realized there were multiple careers in communication, each requiring a different skill set for a different job.

Study an Integrated Marketing Communications Program

When someone opens their mind to the various perspectives of communication across multiple spheres of work, those perspectives eventually need to be linked together to build a good plan of action that yields market results. This is why it’s important not to learn just parts of the communication field, but to study a full Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) program.

The Delhi School of Communication's IMC Legacy

Such a program was started by The Delhi School of Communication (DSC) more than 30 years ago – long before these patterns even existed – through its visionary expertise, introducing a completely new concept in the field and meeting challenges as the Institute evolved. Students begin by understanding the basic product: how to market it, brand it, and talk about it in a way that sells and builds the market holistically.

The PGDPC Program

DSC’s prestigious Post Graduate Diploma Programme in IMC (PGDPC) is an all-encompassing, comprehensive program that equips each student to face not only career challenges but also, in a subtle manner, evolve from within with greater grit.

Parts always join to make a whole. DSC’s 2-year program integrates classroom knowledge into real applicability through 5–7 months of Internships and Apprenticeships with industry – creating a strong theory-practice nexus.

Careers in Communication

Broadly, the spectrum of careers in communication spans several fields:

  • Public Relations
  • Event Management
  • Journalism
  • Advertising – including client servicing, strategic planning, brand and media management
  • Digital marketing and social media management
  • Creative areas such as copywriting, visualization, and content management
  • Supporting functions such as video editing, camera work, and photography

Careers in Advertising

Careers in advertising include getting new business, servicing the client’s communication needs, planning ad exposure across relevant media (media planning), and making the message for multiple media platforms – copywriting, visualizing, filming the ad, writing the script, and editing the message, including its color, music, and other details.

For getting new business and maintaining existing clients, continuous research is essential, alongside both a researcher and a client-servicing person. Account planners study a client’s brand and help plan the required advertising campaign for specified media, while the creative team produces the ads across the media being used. To support these activities, agencies need Account Planners, Brand Managers, Media Planners, and Digital Experts.

AI is embedded into every activity across all communication platforms today, making it critical to learn this tool – DSC’s program embeds the use of AI throughout its curriculum.

Making an ad film requires film producers, directors, script writers, and video and script editors. All these roles require professional training and a combined understanding of digital media, basic marketing, advertising, branding, filmmaking, and creative editing.

Content Strategy

Content strategy – creating content across mediums that merges into a full spectrum of creative brand messaging – is a powerful part of IMC.

Journalism

Journalism spans print, audio/visual, digital, radio, and photo journalism, with options in reporting, editing, printing, research, photography, and extensive investigative work.

Where to Start: Focus Towards Your Dream, Your Goal

To pursue any aspect of communication, start with a daily habit of reading newspapers, magazines, stories, or whatever interests you. Even though AI is useful for speedy writing, it remains a tool – it cannot produce what your own mind thinks, feels, and expresses. This is Your Intelligence (YI), and it applies across every form of communication: print, broadcast, advertising, and digital.

At DSC, students are encouraged to combine original human thinking (YI) with AI across all forms of communication, making their output unique and different.

Journalism and Broadcasting Careers

If you want to pursue journalism – print, digital, or broadcast – as a career, options extend beyond reporting and investigation into camera production, live telecast, and studio or field delivery. Learning how to collect and analyze a story matters, since facts always build credibility.

Knowledge of the different types of digital media is also critical to understanding which form of communication to use, and where and when. DSC teaches the use of all digital tools and their applications across its PG and UG courses. Certificate courses, by contrast, tend to cover only one specific form of communication – which is why studying a program that integrates all these subject areas intelligently leads to better application at work.

Job vs. Career

In earlier times, families encouraged children to complete their studies first and then look for job options. Today, students want to gain experience almost immediately. That’s why it makes sense to join a program that encourages applying what you learn as you go – building both your resume and the strong, grounded knowledge platform required for a fantastic career.

It’s easy to get a job; it’s tough to build a career. Building a career requires investment of time, continuous focus, and realigning with one’s own dreams and goals.

At DSC, in-depth knowledge across these areas is taught through workshops, games, and creative exercises that apply concepts across all fields of communication, merged with new AI tools and techniques. As the saying goes: short-cut gyaan leads to short-term dhyaan, and short-term application.

Careers in Entertainment and the Arts

Entertainment is a multi-faceted business option. With extra talent – dancing, singing, photography, theatre – and practice in these extracurricular activities, one can become a singer, dancer, part of a production unit, or an individual performer.

Multi-scale, high-level events offer chances for creative talent to evolve into a career, including opportunities in production, direction, filming, animation, VFX, and digital media use in films, documentaries, reels, vlogs, and podcasts. Iconic productions like Avatar, Baahubali, The Lion King, and The Jungle Book show how technology, creativity, and core communication concepts combine into powerful expression.

Careers in Public Relations

Public Relations, Publicity Management, and Public Affairs are strong, evolving careers that blend journalistic writing and analysis with PR and related fields – including speech writing. Storytelling has become the benchmark of powerful communication: holding an audience’s attention while engaging with depth and impact on people’s consumption, purchasing patterns, and lives – that’s what great communication does.

Research, Data Analysis, and Scriptwriting

Research and fact-finding form the base of historical films, documentaries, and all forms of communication, alongside data analysis and projection for shaping new messaging. Researchers and data analysts play a critical role in every story baseline, while scriptwriters and editors form the backbone of powerful communication. Art and literature remain big business with high profit potential, rooted in painting, sketching, and theatre.

Teaching as a Communication Career

Teaching communication is yet another career avenue – from schooling and college through higher education in specific areas. One can specialize in a particular area while still holding knowledge of related fields.

Building a Holistic Foundation in Communication

IMC is a broad band of integrated communication learning – holistic in its thought, application, and outcome. Studying the various subjects and integrating them in a 360-degree manner strengthens your professional anchor.

Youngsters interested in video editing, photography, reel-making, and influencing still need this foundational understanding – not just to produce content, but to do so with genuine marketing focus and real knowledge of the consumer. Without understanding who you’re talking to, it’s like throwing a ball at a wall: it only comes back and hurts the thrower. Allow the ball to jump and slowly come back to you.

Conclusion

With a strong foundation, you can travel your career journey with confidence and conviction – for longer innings, even as you switch careers later on, already possessing the required base. A broad-based knowledge of the core elements of communication can help you take flight in the right direction with greater vigor and conviction.

Steady as you fly!
